Mini split installations require specific parts beyond the unit itself. Here is a complete checklist so you do not make extra supply house trips.
Line Set
Pre-charged line sets come in standard lengths (15, 25, 50 feet). The sizing depends on the unit capacity. Most residential mini splits use 1/4" x 3/8" for units up to 18,000 BTU and 1/4" x 1/2" for 24,000+ BTU units. Always verify with the manufacturer specifications.
Electrical
- Disconnect box (non-fused or fused, sized for the unit amperage)
- 10/2 or 10/3 UF-B cable (outdoor-rated, length from disconnect to unit)
- Appropriate breaker for the subpanel (usually 20A or 30A)
- Whip connector (liquid-tight flexible conduit, 3/4" x 6')
Mounting
- Wall bracket for outdoor condenser (if not ground-mounted)
- Indoor unit mounting plate (usually included with unit)
- Vibration isolation pads for condenser
- Wall sleeve or line set cover for penetration
Accessories
- Condensate drain line (5/8" ID vinyl tubing)
- Drain line trap or condensate pump (if gravity drain is not possible)
- Line set cover (for clean exterior appearance)
- Putty or silicone for wall penetration seal
- Zip ties and cable clips
Refrigerant (if line set is field-charged)
Most pre-charged units include enough refrigerant for the included line set length. If using a longer line set, you will need additional R-410A refrigerant. Check the unit specifications for the additional charge per foot of line set beyond the included length.
